The pictures got a bit out of order when I uploaded them, but the above photo is of Ned running in a cloud of lake flies. We arrived at our house in Entebbe the same day as the lake flies did. We had heard about these little pests, how they look like a gray cloud over the water and the wind blows them to shore, but we had no idea how bad they would be. From what we've heard, this was the worst "invasion" Entebbe has had for a long time and it was BAD! Even though our windows were screened, they came in around the screen and doors and we had literally hundreds of them dead on the floor and all over the walls and ceilings. For our first three days, it seemed like most of our time was spent trying to clean up these nasty bugs. They've also got an odor like fish, so our house reeked like dead fish. It was a bit of a rough way to start our new life in Entebbe. I told Leo I would have paid a lot of money to borrow a vacuum cleaner those first few days. But thankfully, the lake flies are only an occasional pestilence and they are gone now. So...
After a week at Matoke Inn, we loaded all our gear onto a van and headed to Entebbe. This picture is one of the first views of Lake Victoria from the road on the way to our house.
Aside from the lake flies, we are getting used to living in a world of keys and cell phones! This house was full of keys when we arrived. Leo was happy to finally find the key to open the kitchen door!
The first night in our house we just threw mattresses on the floor in one of the bedrooms and the kids crashed. They are so good about being able to sleep anywhere and share beds. I'm thankful!
Once the lake flies left us, the children started exploring the yard and have had a blast discovering all the creepy-crawlies that live here. They love to catch crickets, grasshoppers, dragonflies, millipedes, frogs, toads... they don't care so much for the pinching ants and I HATE the cockroaches, but we've only had a couple of those so far. One afternoon they set up a Refreshment Stand in the back yard and were trying to sell drinks of water. They were thrilled when Leo gave Michael money to go and buy a drink from them!
Somehow, we're not exactly sure how, we have inherited two dogs. A missionary family left and needed a home for their dogs, so we now have Angel (pictured above) and Shadow. Not sure if we'll keep them both, but they've been great for keeping the monkeys out of the yard and the kids have already grown quite attached.
A few days ago Leo had the kids mix cement to extend the platform in the kitchen for our fridge. Right now it is sitting in the dining room, which is convenient when you want a cold drink at dinner time!
Here is Kaiden doing a bit of cement work. As of this posting, the cement is dry and we could move the fridge anytime now. Leo has been great about working on things in the house. He did some plumbing and now we've got incredible water pressure (you've got to be careful or you'll be blown away now!). He has hung mosquito nets, put together beds we are borrowing (and a couple we have bought), taped around the windows so the bugs can't get it so easily... He's such a handy fella! I am hoping we can buy paint this week and begin painting the rooms inside. In spite of our rough start with the lake flies, things are going well and we are settling in more and more each day. I've had some good reminders to slow down and enjoy the moment. I don't have to accomplish everything today! We so appreciate the prayers and are resting in the assurance that we are right where God wants us to be, doing what He wants us to do.
